Acre Presents: Jeffrey Silverstein

Jeff, thanks for taking time to sit down with us. Can you introduce yourself and fill us in on what you do?

I'm a songwriter from Portland, Oregon currently on tour opening up for Mikaela Davis and in support of my new album, Roseway. We're really looking forward to our first show in SLC on Tuesday August 6th.

You've talked before about the idea of getting out of your own way creatively - what does getting out of the way of yourself look like?
Great question. For me it's trusting and investing in my process. Following different paths and trying to approach everything I do with beginner's mind.

"Roseway" (Jeff's new album) is named after your neighborhood in Portland - how much of an influence did the city and your neighborhood have on the record?
My wife and I are pulling up on 7 years of living in Portland. We're grateful to have such a strong sense of community and our neighborhood plays a huge part in that. I think the title reflects a sense of being grounded, connected, and presented.

I know you're a teacher - what do you teach and how long have you taught for?
I'm a high-school special education teacher. Been teaching over 10+ years now.

I can imagine balancing the two, being a teacher and a musician, is no easy task. What does that look like for you?
It changes depending on what's going on at any given point in the school year or if I have a lot of shows, recording time, etc coming up. Mostly I have to work with intention and do a lot of checking in with myself (mentally, physically, etc) to make sure I'm not burning out. The school calendar year does create a natural rhythm re: times I'm available to tour or focus on writing which does allow me to plan ahead.

My favorite question - what's on the rider?
We're pretty simple. Some Topo Chico, light beer, mixed nuts, kombucha + sandwiches or a classic vegetable tray.

Who are some of your creative influences? Doesn't necessarily have to be musicians either.
Ah, way too many to name. I'm excited by anyone doing their own thing in their own time.

Again, thanks for the time Jeff. Anything you got going on you'd like the readers to know about?
Thank you! We're just very hyped to have the opportunity to be on the road with Mikaela and her crew. You can also follow along with more of my music, etc via my monthly newsletter. Come see us Tuesday night at Kilby Court!
